Baidu added to Pentagon’s Chinese military list, rejects designation

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) confirmed that the U.S. Department of Defense has included the company on its updated list of "Chinese military companies," a classification the internet search and artificial intelligence giant quickly pushed back against as entirely unjustified.

The Beijing-headquartered technology company issued a formal response denying any underlying structural ties to the defense sector.

Baidu asserted that it is neither a Chinese military company nor a contributor to Beijing's "military-civil fusion" strategy, a national framework that coordinates technology sharing between private commercial entities and the People’s Liberation Army.

In an effort to reassure public market participants, corporate leadership highlighted that the compilation—known formally as the Section 1260H list—carries no immediate financial penalties.

Baidu noted that the roster does not function as a strict sanctions block and imposes no active restrictions on trading the company's publicly listed securities on U.S. or Hong Kong exchanges.

Furthermore, Baidu stated that related U.S. government procurement limits associated with the listing are not expected to impact its core commercial business or operational revenue.

The Pentagon's sweeping regulatory update, which also saw the inclusion of e-commerce pioneer Alibaba Group Holding and electric vehicle leader BYD, comes less than a month after a high-profile diplomatic summit in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The administration's sudden expansion of the list underscores a persistent bipartisan focus in Washington on isolating Chinese tech firms from federal supply chains, regardless of high-level efforts to stabilize broader bilateral trade relations.

Baidu indicated that it is assessing its next steps and may leverage legal or regulatory channels to contest the designation and protect shareholder interests.
