  • China’s regulator approved Apple’s generative AI services, which will integrate Alibaba’s Qwen and Baidu models.
  • Apple shares were up at $329.27 during trading on July 16, 2026.
  • This move aims to bring Apple Intelligence features to Chinese users to maintain competitiveness in the region.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) received approval from the Cyberspace Administration of China to launch its generative AI services in the country by integrating models from Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) and Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU).

This regulatory clearance follows previous delays in bringing Apple Intelligence to the region, a market where the company recently saw sales increase 28% to $20.5 billion during the second quarter.

The integration will incorporate Qwen’s text and image processing capabilities into Apple's operating systems, while Baidu also confirmed its ongoing collaboration with the iPhone maker to develop features for local users.

Apple now aims to leverage these local AI partnerships to strengthen its position in China, where it recently regained the number two spot in the smartphone market.

Following the announcement, Apple's share price was unchanged at $235.80.

Apple has spent the last year navigating complex regulatory requirements and exploring various model integrations, including potential partnerships with DeepSeek and ByteDance, to ensure its AI tools meet Chinese content standards.

This expansion represents a continuation of Apple’s broader strategy to align its hardware and software offerings with local market demands in one of its most significant international sales regions.
