Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) announced plans to invest up to £2 billion in the United Kingdom over the next five years, a strategic move designed to accelerate AI innovation, scientific research, and technical workforce development.

The commitment, unveiled by AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su at London Tech Week, aligns with the UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and its national AI Hardware Strategy.

The investment initiative focuses on expanding the nation’s sovereign AI infrastructure.

A central pillar of the program involves deepened collaborations with leading academic and industry partners.

AMD has established new strategic partnerships with Imperial College London and Oriole Networks to advance research in quantum and next-generation computing.

In particular, the collaboration with Oriole Networks will utilize AMD’s high-performance hardware—including Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs—to power the ARIA Scaling Inference Lab, which aims to demonstrate the efficiency of photonic networking in large-scale AI environments.

Furthermore, AMD is strengthening its support for the University of Cambridge’s high-performance computing ecosystem.

The company, in partnership with Dell Technologies, is providing technical resources for the university’s Zenith AI supercomputer and the Sunrise fusion AI system.

These platforms are designed to tackle complex scientific challenges, ranging from plasma turbulence modeling for fusion energy to large-scale AI-driven discovery in healthcare and public-sector innovation.

The deployment of AMD’s hardware and its open-source ROCm software suite is expected to play a critical role in providing the compute resources necessary for researchers and developers across the UK.
