Alpha Metallurgical Resources (NYSE:AMR) announced a fatal accident involving an employee at its Horse Creek Eagle Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia, late Thursday evening.
The victim was identified as 53-year-old Aaron Warrix of Chapmanville, West Virginia.
Warrix, a shuttle car operator with four and a half years of experience at the company, was fatally struck by a piece of falling rock while underground.
Emergency procedures were initiated immediately, but the company confirmed that Warrix passed away from his injuries.
"We are heartbroken to learn of Aaron's passing," Andy Eidson, Alpha’s chief executive officer, said in a statement Friday morning.
"Our hearts are with Aaron's wife, family, and friends during this incredibly difficult time."
The Horse Creek Eagle Mine is operated by Marfork Coal Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alpha.
In accordance with standard safety protocols following a fatality, the mine has paused operations as the company collaborates with the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulatory agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the rock fall.
The incident marks a somber moment for the Bristol, Tennessee-based metallurgical coal producer, which has recently highlighted its commitment to rigorous safety standards across its Central Appalachian operations.
