Firefly Aerospace (NASDAQ:FLY) achieved a major operational milestone on Wednesday with the successful launch of its Alpha Flight 7 mission, dubbed "Stairway to Seven."
The Alpha rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Space Force Base at 5:50 p.m. PDT, successfully completing orbital insertion and delivering a demonstrator payload for Lockheed Martin.
The mission served as a high-stakes "return to flight" following a series of delays due to upper-level winds and sensor readings.
Beyond payload delivery, the flight was a critical testbed for the upcoming Alpha Block II configuration.
Firefly confirmed that the rocket successfully performed a second-stage engine relight and validated several in-house upgrades, including a new avionics suite, enhanced thermal protection, and structural improvements.
"Alpha Flight 7 was flawlessly executed with all mission requirements completed," said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace.
The success marks a significant recovery for the company, coming months after a ground test incident in Texas temporarily paused the launch schedule.
The data gathered from Wednesday’s flight will pave the way for Alpha Flight 8, which is expected to debut the full Block II configuration.
