AI hack discovery sends Zcash down 50%

Share

Zcash slumped about 50% after developers disclosed a critical vulnerability discovered with the help of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, raising fresh concerns about how artificial intelligence could reshape crypto security.

The flaw, which had gone undetected for more than four years, could have allowed an attacker to create an unlimited number of Zcash tokens, threatening the integrity of one of the crypto sector’s largest privacy-focused networks.

“There will be more exploits,”

Said Zcash co-creator Eli Ben-Sasson, adding:

“There will be cases where the bad guys will find the bugs first and exploit protocols.”

Security researcher Taylor Hornby identified the vulnerability shortly after Anthropic released Opus 4.8 in May, giving developers time to patch the issue before any confirmed malicious exploitation occurred.

The disclosure nevertheless rattled investors, with crypto entrepreneur Arthur Hayes saying he sold his entire Zcash position following the announcement due to concerns about the network’s security.

The episode highlights growing fears that AI systems can dramatically accelerate vulnerability discovery, enabling both security researchers and cybercriminals to uncover weaknesses in blockchain protocols far faster than traditional manual reviews.

Researchers warn that as AI becomes more powerful and widely available, crypto projects may face increasing pressure to adopt AI-assisted security audits while also preparing for emerging threats such as quantum computing that could challenge existing cryptographic protections.

At the time of reporting, Zcash price was $486.68.
