Zcash (CRYPTO:ZEC) has activated the Ironwood network upgrade, adding new features aimed at improving privacy and expanding blockchain compatibility.

The upgrade introduces support for the Crosslink protocol, allowing Zcash to connect with other blockchain networks more efficiently.

Ironwood also adds Shielded Assets, allowing developers to issue private tokens on the Zcash network while using its privacy technology.

The Zcash community said the upgrade lays the foundation for future applications and broader use of privacy-focused digital assets.

The upgrade marks another step in Zcash's development roadmap, and following the announcement ZEC was up about 5% at US$52.30.

Ironwood is the first major Zcash network upgrade since NU6, which introduced the Zcash Shielded Assets framework and other protocol improvements.

Zcash has continued expanding its privacy technology while supporting broader interoperability with other blockchain ecosystems.
