ZachXBT slams UK sanctions over HTX funds

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT has criticised the United Kingdom’s sanctions regime after compliance measures linked to HTX reportedly resulted in frozen funds and blocked transactions for some cryptocurrency users.

The dispute centres on sanctions imposed earlier this year against Huobi Global S.A., a Panama-registered entity affiliated with HTX that UK authorities accused of facilitating more than $1.5 billion in transactions linked to Russian sanctions evasion.

Writing on X, ZachXBT described the enforcement measures as “a bit of an overreach”, arguing that compliance systems are now flagging wallets that merely interacted with HTX-linked addresses in the past rather than targeting only sanctioned entities.

The issue has highlighted concerns around so-called address tainting, a compliance practice in which risk-monitoring tools assign elevated risk scores to wallets that have previously transacted with sanctioned addresses.

Several users reported difficulties transferring funds through third-party services following the sanctions, while some exchanges and service providers introduced restrictions on assets linked to HTX-related wallet activity.

ZachXBT argued that previous sanctions against crypto services such as Blender and Hydra targeted platforms where illicit activity represented a significant share of transactions, whereas HTX serves a large retail user base that may include users with no connection to alleged wrongdoing.

The controversy comes amid growing regulatory pressure on HTX and associated entities, including legal action from UK regulators and a separate dispute with World Liberty Financial, which recently froze addresses linked to HTX as part of its sanctions compliance procedures.

At the time of reporting, World Liberty Financial price was $0.05513.
