X launches smart cashtags in finance push

Share

X has launched a smart cashtag feature in the US and Canada, allowing users to view real-time stock and cryptocurrency data directly within the app as part of its broader financial services push.

The feature enables users to tag assets or smart contract addresses in posts, with clickable cashtags displaying live price charts and related content.

“Cashtags are just the first step in our commitment to be the best destination for the finance and crypto community,”

Said X head of product, Nikita Bier.

In Canada, users can also trade stocks and crypto directly through a partnership with Wealthsimple, while US trading functionality has yet to launch.

The rollout forms part of Elon Musk’s plan to transform X into an “everything app” combining social media, payments, trading and e-commerce in a single platform.

Industry observers suggest the move could position X as a Web3 version of China’s WeChat Pay, integrating financial services directly into social feeds.

The company is expected to expand the feature to Android, web and global markets as it continues building out its financial ecosystem.
