X to launch in-app trading soon
X will introduce in-app stock and cryptocurrency trading within weeks through a new Smart Cashtags feature, according to the platform’s head of product.
Nikita Bier said the rollout will allow users to trade assets directly from their timeline, expanding beyond the platform’s earlier price-tracking Cashtag system.
“We are launching a number of features in a couple of weeks, including Smart Cashtags that will enable you to trade stocks and crypto directly from the timeline,”
Bier said in a post on X.
The platform previously introduced basic Cashtags in 2022 to track major equities and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, but that feature was later discontinued.
The integration of direct trading marks a significant step towards owner Elon Musk’s ambition to transform X into an “everything app” comparable to WeChat, combining social media, payments and financial services.
Musk recently provided an update on X Money, the platform’s payments system currently in limited beta testing, which he described as intended to become the “central source of all monetary transactions”.
With approximately 600 million monthly active users, the addition of in-app trading and payments infrastructure positions X to compete more directly with fintech platforms offering integrated investing and peer-to-peer payment services.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $68,629.36.
