Wells Fargo plans tokenised deposits this fall, starting with US dollar-to-British pound transactions for selected clients.

Unlike traditional transfers, the service will let participating clients move and settle funds outside normal banking hours.

“The program will roll out this fall with a limited U.S. dollar (USD) to British pound (GBP) exchange,” Wells Fargo said.

The service will run on Wells Fargo’s blockchain platform, which supports internal wallets for holding and moving tokenised deposits.

Wells Fargo said the programme will expand to more clients, countries and currencies during 2027, based partly on demand.

The bank joins JPMorgan and Citigroup in developing blockchain-based settlement services for institutional clients.

Wells Fargo filed a March trademark application for “WFUSD”, before announcing its tokenised deposit plans in August.
