Warsh Fed hearing nears amid political opposition

The US Senate Banking Committee is expected to hold a hearing on Kevin Warsh’s nomination as Federal Reserve chair as soon as the week of April 13, according to Punchbowl News.

The timing remains uncertain as it depends on Warsh completing required paperwork, but the hearing would set a clearer path toward confirmation before Jerome Powell’s term ends on May 15.

“Their hesitancy to cut rates, I think, is actually... quite a mark against them,”

Warsh said, criticising the Fed’s current policy stance.

Warsh, a former Fed governor from 2006 to 2011, has indicated he would pursue a “regime change” in how the central bank manages interest rates and its balance sheet.

However, the nomination faces political resistance, with Senator Elizabeth Warren criticising Warsh’s record and Senator Thom Tillis opposing Fed nominees pending a Department of Justice probe into Powell.

The DOJ investigation into Powell relates to spending on a multi-year renovation of Fed office buildings, adding further uncertainty to the leadership transition.

The outcome of the nomination process could have significant implications for US monetary policy, particularly as markets assess the potential for shifts in interest rate strategy under new leadership.
