Virtu completes first 10-minute digital bond repo
- Virtu Financial completed an onchain repo using a Marshall Islands digital bond as collateral.
- The full repo and repurchase cycle settled in under 10 minutes on the Canton Network.
- The transaction combined sovereign digital collateral with atomic onchain settlement between regulated institutions.
Virtu Financial, M1X Global and Tradeweb Markets completed an onchain repo using a sovereign digital bond as collateral.
The USDM1 bond was issued onchain by the Republic of the Marshall Islands and backed 1:1 by short-term US Treasuries.
“Virtu's business is built on providing liquidity efficiently across every market we operate in,” said Virtu Financial Head of Rates Sales Dan Eckstein.
The transaction settled on the Canton Network, with securities delivery, cash and the return leg completed atomically in under 10 minutes.
Following the announcement, Virtu Financial shares were up 1.98% at US$67.04, while Tradeweb Markets shares rose 0.55% to US$108.10.
USDM1 is structured under New York law and secured 1:1 by short-duration US Treasuries held in bankruptcy-remote custody.
The transaction followed a July Tradeweb deal that transferred a tokenised US Treasury from Franklin Templeton to Virtu Financial on Canton using USDCx.
