US Senate advances Trump Iran war curb

The United States Senate voted to advance a resolution that could require US President Donald Trump to obtain congressional authorisation to continue military operations against Iran.

The procedural war-powers measure passed by a 50-47 vote on Tuesday, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support, according to Reuters, amid growing political pressure over the nearly three-month US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

“Congress has the power to slam the brakes on this unwise conflict,”

Said Tim Kaine, adding:

“Today should be the day when the Senate tells the President to stop his disastrous war.”

Lawmakers backing the bill argued the US Constitution gives Congress, rather than the president, authority to approve military conflicts, while the ongoing war has increased pressure on global economies through rising fuel and energy prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The resolution would still need to pass the full Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives before reaching Trump, who could veto the legislation and force Congress to secure a two-thirds majority override vote, while Bill Cassidy said lawmakers had been left “in the dark” about military operations against Iran.

Analysts said the conflict and broader macroeconomic pressures have contributed to crypto markets trading sideways for almost four months, with any potential de-escalation likely to improve investor confidence in higher-risk assets including bitcoin.

Tim Sun said easing geopolitical tensions would act as a mild positive catalyst for risk assets if lower oil prices reduce valuation risks across markets, while Andri Fauzan Adziima said the Senate vote could trigger a 6% to 10% bitcoin relief rally based on prior market reactions to de-escalation headlines.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $76,801.69.
