Bessent says US seized $1B crypto
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US government has seized roughly $1 billion worth of cryptocurrency from Iran as part of its efforts to disrupt financial networks linked to the country.
Speaking at the Reagan National Economic Forum in California, Bessent said authorities had directly taken control of digital wallets associated with Iranian actors.
“I believe that we have seized about $1 billion of their crypto,”
Said US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent.
Bessent added that some wallet holders may not yet realise their assets have been confiscated, stating:
“That authorities had just outright grabbed the wallets.”
The remarks come as Washington and Tehran reportedly move closer to an agreement that could extend a fragile ceasefire and reduce tensions affecting global energy markets.
Recent reports suggest Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has promoted Bitcoin-based maritime insurance services, while the Financial Times reported that Tehran plans to require some oil tankers using the Strait of Hormuz to pay transit fees in Bitcoin.
Separately, Reuters reported that scammers posing as Iranian authorities have demanded payments from shipping firms in Bitcoin and Tether’s USDT, while Israeli authorities alleged last year that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps had received around $1.5 billion in the stablecoin.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $73,365.14.
