TON jumps as network revives Gram brand
The Open Network has unveiled plans to rebrand its Toncoin token as Gram, reviving the original name used in the project's 2018 white paper and triggering a sharp rally in the cryptocurrency.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced the change on Monday, describing the move as a return to the network's origins and a step toward the next phase of development.
“Gram was the original name of TON’s currency in the first white paper,”
Durov said, adding:
“We’re returning to our roots — and starting a new chapter.”
The proposed rebrand follows Telegram's emergence as the network's primary driver and largest validator earlier this year, with the project positioning the change as part of its broader “Make TON Great Again” roadmap.
TON launched a governance vote on the proposal, clarifying that there will be no token swap, migration or balance changes, with all wallets, addresses and smart contracts remaining unchanged throughout the transition.
At the time of the announcement, nearly 80% of participating tokens supported the proposal, representing around 1.8 million TON pledged in favour of the rebrand.
Investors reacted positively to the news, sending TON up more than 15% from around $1.95 to above $2.25 before some gains were pared back, while the network continues pursuing its long-term goal of building a Web3 super app ecosystem for Telegram's one billion users.
At the time of reporting, Toncoin price was $2.05.
