
Tim Draper says banks face quantum threat first
Billionaire investor Tim Draper has argued that traditional banks are more vulnerable to future quantum computing advances than Bitcoin, reigniting debate over how emerging technologies could affect modern financial systems.
In a June 9 post on X, Draper dismissed concerns that quantum computers would undermine Bitcoin before impacting conventional finance, claiming that many banking systems rely on ageing infrastructure that could face greater security challenges.
“Quantum will crack the banks long before it touches the blockchain,”
Draper said.
“Everyone’s panicking about quantum breaking Bitcoin’s encryption while banks are running on legacy infrastructure that makes Bitcoin look like Fort Knox,”
He added.
Draper said Bitcoin's decentralised architecture provides a degree of resilience that traditional financial systems may struggle to match, highlighting the role of full-node operators in maintaining network integrity.
He argued that even after a significant security event, Bitcoin's network could potentially recover by rolling back to the last secure block, whereas banks and fiat-based systems may have fewer recovery mechanisms available.
The comments form part of Draper's broader bullish outlook on Bitcoin, which includes a long-standing prediction that the cryptocurrency could reach US$250,000 as inflation pressures weaken confidence in traditional currencies.
Draper also reiterated his belief that growing merchant adoption could eventually allow Bitcoin to compete directly with government-issued currencies, while serving future use cases involving artificial intelligence, robotics, micropayments and decentralised commerce.
