Key points

  • THORChain halted activity across ten blockchains after an Ethereum reorganisation caused a 10 ETH vault shortfall.
  • Its automatic solvency checker stopped Ethereum swaps, while node operators halted outbound payments and other chains.
  • The user returned the missing 10 ETH, restoring vault solvency as developers work on security fixes.

THORChain halted activity across ten blockchains after an Ethereum reorganisation triggered an unauthorised 10 ETH payout.

The incident began on 31 October when a deposit recorded in a dropped Ethereum block never reached the canonical chain.

The automatic solvency checker detected the discrepancy and stopped Ethereum swaps before node operators blocked further outbound payments.

The reorganisation caused THORChain to credit a deposit that never reached Ethereumโ€™s canonical chain, triggering an incorrect payout.

The sender received a refund, while the vault also released 10 ETH that it never received.

THORChain uses three node votes to trigger emergency halts, while four countervotes can reverse those decisions.

Ten networks remain halted: Cosmos, Bitcoin Cash, BNB Chain, Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Solana, Tron and Zcash.

Four networks remain active, while developers prepare fixes and node operators will determine when halted chains can resume.
