Thailand SEC proposes retail access to crypto derivatives

  • Thailand’s SEC proposed rules allowing retail investors to access some overseas crypto derivatives.
  • Eligible products would need central clearing and oversight from approved foreign regulators.
  • The consultation is open until September 30, with no implementation date announced.

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission proposed rules for retail access to selected overseas crypto derivatives.

Eligible products would need to resemble derivatives already traded in Thailand, including their assets, maturity, leverage and settlement methods.

The products would also need to trade on exchanges using central counterparties and approved regulatory oversight.

Derivatives that fail those conditions could remain available only to institutional investors under the proposal.

The SEC said institutions are better equipped to assess and manage complex and high-risk derivative products.

The consultation runs until September 30, while the SEC has not set an implementation date.

The proposal follows Thailand’s March 5 designation of cryptocurrencies and digital tokens as permitted underlying assets for derivatives.
