Former NBA guard Terry Rozier faces bribery charges
Former NBA guard Terry Rozier has been hit with new federal sports bribery charges as prosecutors expand a major investigation into alleged game-fixing and illegal sports betting activity.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn filed a superseding indictment accusing Rozier of participating in a scheme to manipulate his performance during a March 23, 2023 game between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans.
According to the indictment, Rozier allegedly entered into a prearranged agreement with co-conspirators to leave the game early, enabling bettors holding "under" wagers on his individual statistics to profit from the outcome.
The new charges include sports bribery and honest services wire fraud conspiracy, adding to existing wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy counts already filed against the former NBA player.
The allegations surfaced alongside a guilty plea from co-conspirator Marves Fairley, who admitted to paying an NBA player as part of the scheme and acknowledged using insider information tied to basketball betting markets.
Prosecutors claim the original $100,000 payment was later renegotiated to approximately $70,000 after betting profits came in below expectations, while sportsbooks reportedly suspended wagering on Rozier player props due to unusually high betting activity.
Rozier has denied wrongdoing, with his attorney arguing that prosecutors are attempting to stretch federal fraud laws beyond their intended scope, while the case continues to fuel wider debate over sports betting integrity and prediction markets that reward negative player outcomes.
