Telegram said it will launch a native self-custody Gram (CRYPTO:GRAM) wallet this summer, giving more than one billion users direct access to crypto inside the messaging app.
Founder Pavel Durov said the wallet will let users send Gram instantly without fees, making it the first built-in self-custody wallet available across Telegram's global user base.
"This summer will see the largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history," Durov said. "Instant zero-fee crypto transactions for over a billion users are about to become reality."
Unlike custodial wallets, the new wallet will let users control their own private keys instead of relying on a third party to hold their funds.
Telegram did not announce an exact launch date or explain how key recovery or regional availability will work, but Durov said the rollout will begin this summer.
Telegram already offers a separate Wallet in Telegram service with more than 150 million registered users, but the new product will be built directly into the main app.
The announcement pushed Gram higher as investors reacted to Telegram's plan to expand crypto access across its messaging platform.
