Sweden demands $56.5M from six crypto firms

Sweden’s Tax Agency has ordered six crypto mining firms to pay about $56.5 million in back taxes and penalties.

The firms operated in Boden and were accused of hiding mining activities through complex corporate structures to claim tax benefits.

“You come to a society and steal from it,” said Swedish Tax Agency head of intelligence Patrik Lillqvist.

The action followed a 2024–2026 audit that identified more than $50 million in unpaid taxes and penalties across nine crypto firms.

Several companies have appealed their assessments, while lower courts have upheld the tax authority’s findings.

Bikupan Datacenter has entered financial restructuring after failing to meet its tax liabilities and has appealed to Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court.

Bikupan CEO Johanna Törnblad disputed the findings, saying its crypto mining was carried out by independent external mining pools rather than the HIVE group.
