Spain arrests six in €1.3M crypto heist

Spain’s National Police have arrested six suspected members of a criminal group linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua over a series of violent robberies targeting wealthy individuals holding cryptocurrency, cash and luxury goods.

The investigation began in August 2025 following a Madrid home invasion in which attackers allegedly stole €1.5 million worth of jewellery and watches alongside €1.3 million in cryptocurrency.

Authorities said the suspects carefully selected high-profile targets, placing them under surveillance before luring them to holiday apartments where they were robbed and, in some cases, tied up, gagged and threatened at gunpoint.

Police reported that victims were forced to surrender access to both cryptocurrency and traditional financial assets, while one incident involved a firearm being discharged after a victim resisted, placing the individual’s life at risk.

The suspects are facing charges including membership of a criminal organisation, violent robbery, unlawful detention, fraud and crimes against public health, with three of the six individuals already ordered into pre-trial detention.

Tren de Aragua has increasingly been linked to cryptocurrency-related crimes, including theft and money laundering operations, prompting growing scrutiny from law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.

The group was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the US government in February 2025, following earlier sanctions imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control in 2024 for allegedly laundering criminal proceeds through cryptocurrency networks.
