South Korea moves to block 27 crypto exchange websites

  • South Korean authorities are moving to block access to 27 websites linked to unregistered cryptocurrency businesses.
  • The targeted platforms reportedly include KuCoin, MEXC, Phemex, XT.com and Bitrue.
  • The action extends enforcement beyond mobile applications as regulators target crypto services operating without required local registration.

South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit has requested website access restrictions targeting unregistered virtual asset service providers serving domestic customers.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission reviewed the sites on 6 and 7 October before deciding to restrict domestic access.

The targeted platforms include KuCoin, MEXC, Phemex, XT.com and Bitrue, according to South Korean authorities.

The measures extend enforcement beyond Apple and Google app marketplaces to websites operated by unregistered crypto businesses.

South Korean law requires virtual asset service providers to obtain Information Security Management System (ISMS) certification and register with the Financial Intelligence Unit before operating legally.

These requirements also apply to overseas crypto businesses targeting South Korean customers, bringing offshore platforms within the country’s regulatory framework.

The decision broadens South Korea’s efforts to restrict access to unregistered cryptocurrency services and prevent potential user harm.
