Police in South Korea arrested a 40-year-old man for distributing an AI-generated image of an escaped wolf that misled authorities and triggered public alerts.

The image depicted Neukgu, a wolf that had escaped from a zoo in Daejeon, and was convincing enough to be used in official warnings sent to residents.

“A single AI-manipulated image delayed the capture of the wolf by as many as nine days,”

Said Daejeon Metropolitan Police.

Authorities said the fabricated image disrupted emergency operations, diverting police, firefighters and other resources during a large-scale search involving drones and thermal cameras.

The suspect told investigators he created and shared the image “just for fun,” but now faces charges of obstructing official duties by deception.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison or a fine of 10 million Korean won, equivalent to roughly $6,700.

The case underscores growing concerns over AI-generated misinformation, following similar incidents during major disasters where fake images spread faster than verification efforts.
