Solana Foundation president defends meme coin activity
Lily Liu said meme coin activity on Solana should be viewed primarily as a large-scale infrastructure stress test rather than the defining purpose of the blockchain ecosystem.
Speaking during a discussion with Fundstrat’s Sean Farrell, Liu described meme coin trading frenzies as “production tests” that demonstrate Solana’s ability to process high transaction volumes under real market conditions.
Liu argued meme coins occupy one end of a broader spectrum of blockchain assets ranging from purely speculative tokens to applications with practical utility, while positioning network performance as the more important long-term product.
The comments come as meme coins reportedly accounted for approximately 62% of Solana decentralised application revenue during June 2025, highlighting the network’s significant exposure to speculative trading activity.
The remarks also contrasted with earlier statements from Anatoly Yakovenko, who previously described NFTs and meme coins as “digital slop” with limited intrinsic value.
Solana’s meme coin ecosystem gained broader mainstream visibility earlier this year following launches tied to political figures including Donald Trump and Melania Trump.
Beyond speculative trading activity, the Solana Foundation said it is also developing post-quantum digital signature technology on a testnet as part of broader efforts to strengthen the network’s long-term infrastructure and security.
At the time of reporting, Solana price was $85.21.
