SEC staff grants Canton Coin limited minting relief
Key points
- SEC staff views Canton Coin as a digital commodity under its existing crypto asset framework.
- The Division will not recommend enforcement over specified programmatic minting without securities registration.
- The response provides a fact-specific regulatory position for Canton Network’s native token.
The SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance views Canton Coin (CC) as a digital commodity and offers limited relief for programmatic minting.
Staff cited network utility, supply-demand dynamics and the absence of a central controlling party.
“Canton Coin is a ‘digital commodity,’” according to SEC Deputy Chief Counsel Jonathan Ingram.
The position covers programmatic minting by Super Validators, Validators and application providers under specified conditions.
The relief addresses registration requirements under Section 5 of the Securities Act and Section 12(g) of the Exchange Act.
Digital Asset’s filing described roughly 60 Super Validators, more than 700 Validators and over 120 applications across Canton.
The filing also reported average monthly US Treasury repo trades exceeding $7.1 trillion across the network.
The response gives Canton Coin a fact-specific staff position, not a binding SEC legal determination.
