Satoshi-era Bitcoin wallet moves $1.47M after 16 Years

A Bitcoin wallet dating back to 2010 transferred 20 BTC worth approximately $1.47 million on Sunday, ending nearly 16 years of inactivity and drawing attention from blockchain analysts.

Galaxy Research identified the transaction in block 951828, mined at 05:14 UTC on May 31, with the coins originating from an address that had remained dormant since August 2010 during Bitcoin's earliest mining period.

“Satoshi era coins moved this AM (not suspected of being satoshi’s coins though),”

Said Galaxy Research head of firmwide research Alex Thorn.

The wallet belongs to Bitcoin's so-called Satoshi era, when CPU mining was common and only a small community of enthusiasts participated in securing the network.

Galaxy Research said the address did not match known patterns associated with wallets believed to belong to Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, reducing speculation that the transfer was linked to the cryptocurrency's founder.

The 20 BTC movement represents a relatively small transaction compared with Bitcoin's approximately $16.3 billion in daily spot trading volume and had no immediate impact on market prices.

The transfer follows a broader pattern of dormant Bitcoin addresses becoming active as higher prices encourage early holders to move, consolidate or reposition long-held coins.

Analysts said it remains unclear whether the owner intends to sell the Bitcoin, transfer it to a modern wallet structure or simply reorganise holdings, with any future exchange deposits likely to provide further clues.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $72,988.76.
