A Miami conference for high-risk finance and crypto traders was forced to change its name at the last minute after Reddit moved to enforce its WallStreetBets trademark.
The three-day event was originally promoted as “WallStreetBets Live” but has been rebranded as “REDACTED Live” following what organisers described as legal threats from Reddit.
Reddit said it trademarks certain community names to prevent individuals from exploiting identities created collectively by users, a spokesperson told Decrypt.
The dispute is the latest chapter in a long-running feud between WallStreetBets founder Jaime Rogozinski and Reddit, after Rogozinski sued the platform in 2023 claiming ownership of the trademark and lost.
The Supreme Court declined to hear Rogozinski’s appeal in November, leaving intact a lower court ruling that sided with Reddit and upheld its right to control the brand.
The Miami event, which charges tickets of up to $10,000, is sponsored by crypto firms including Kraken, Pudgy Penguins and OpenSea, and features speakers such as Jordan Belfort and Martin Shkreli.
Rogozinski said Reddit was overreaching by policing real-world events tied to a culture it did not create, while organisers said they complied with the cease-and-desist to avoid legal risk.
