  • Polygon processed US$309 million in Latin American stablecoin volume during May, according to co-founder Sandeep Nailwal.
  • The figures highlight growing use of local-currency stablecoins such as BRLA and COPM on blockchain networks.
  • Polygon executives say emerging-market stablecoins could become a larger part of global on-chain payments.

Polygon (CRYPTO:POL) processed US$309 million in Latin American stablecoin volume during May, with co-founder Sandeep Nailwal stating the network led the region in stablecoin activity.

The update comes as non-dollar stablecoins continue to expand beyond US dollar-pegged tokens, which have traditionally dominated stablecoin adoption in Latin America.

“Polygon leads stablecoin adoption in LATAM,” said Polygon Foundation co-founder and chief executive Sandeep Nailwal.

Nailwal said non-dollar stablecoin volumes across blockchains have increased 16-fold over the past three years and added that emerging-market stablecoins on Polygon reached a new monthly high in May, with BRLA and COPM ranking among the network's most-used regional stablecoins.

A Visa report published in May found non-dollar stablecoin supply had reached US$1.2 billion and monthly transfer volume had climbed to US$10 billion, while Polygon executives said the trend could support broader payment digitisation and financial inclusion. Following the announcement the Polygon price was unchanged at $0.00.

BRLA is a Brazilian real-pegged stablecoin with a market capitalisation of more than US$3.2 million and is integrated with Brazil's Pix payment system, while COPM is pegged to the Colombian peso.

Polygon has increasingly focused on stablecoin payments and emerging-market adoption as blockchain networks compete to capture transaction activity beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading.
