Pinterest plans job cuts as AI restructuring accelerates

Pinterest has confirmed plans to reduce its global workforce by nearly 15% as part of a board-approved restructuring focused on expanding artificial intelligence capabilities.

The San Francisco-based social media company disclosed the decision in a Form 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The restructuring will affect fewer than 15% of employees and includes a reduction in office space across multiple locations.

Pinterest said the move reflects a strategic decision to shift resources towards artificial intelligence-focused roles and teams.

The company stated it is prioritising AI-powered products and capabilities as part of its long-term growth strategy.

Pinterest also plans to accelerate changes to its sales and go-to-market approach through increased AI adoption.

The company described the restructuring as a reallocation of resources rather than a full retreat from investment.

Despite staff reductions, Pinterest said it intends to reinvest in key development areas and strategic opportunities.

The restructuring process is expected to be completed by the end of the company’s third fiscal quarter.

Pinterest noted that the timeline remains subject to local labour laws and consultation requirements in affected regions.

The company expects to record restructuring charges ranging between $35 million and $45 million.

Pinterest said the majority of these costs will be cash-related expenditures tied to severance and operational changes.

The announcement places Pinterest among a growing number of technology firms reshaping their workforces around AI.

Industry leaders have increasingly warned that AI adoption could displace large segments of the global workforce.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this month, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei warned of rapid job disruption.

We might be six to twelve months away from when the model is doing most, maybe all, of what software engineers do end to end.

Pinterest’s decision follows similar workforce cuts at Meta Platforms, which recently reduced staff in its Reality Labs division.

Meta said its layoffs reflected a shift away from metaverse projects towards AI-driven wearables and mobile features.

Analysts continue to debate the scale and speed of AI-driven job losses across major economies.
