OpenAI files confidentially for US IPO
OpenAI has confidentially filed paperwork for an initial public offering in the United States, positioning the ChatGPT creator for a future stock market debut as competition intensifies across the artificial intelligence sector.
The company announced on X that it had submitted confidential documents to the US Securities and Exchange Commission but said it had not yet determined when the offering would proceed.
“We expect it to leak so we’re just announcing it,”
OpenAI wrote, adding that the company may remain private for some time because certain strategic objectives are easier to pursue outside public markets.
The filing makes OpenAI the latest major AI company to move toward a public listing, following IPO plans announced by Anthropic and ahead of an expected market debut involving Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which owns AI company xAI.
In a blog post accompanying the announcement, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said one of the company’s long-term goals is to develop AI systems capable of advancing AI research independently.
The executives argued that the global economy is increasingly being reshaped by artificial intelligence and stressed the importance of ensuring that advanced AI remains widely accessible rather than concentrated among a small number of institutions.
The planned IPO comes during a period of significant change across the technology sector, where companies are increasingly citing AI-driven productivity gains as a reason for workforce reductions, with tens of thousands of technology and cryptocurrency industry jobs eliminated so far this year.
