
OKX warns bank rails block AI agents
OKX SG chief executive Gracie Lin said traditional banking infrastructure is fundamentally incompatible with the emerging AI agent economy because existing systems were designed around human verification and slow settlement processes.
Lin warned that modern web security systems including CAPTCHAs, one-time passwords and multi-factor authentication create major operational barriers for autonomous AI agents attempting to execute transactions, compare prices and interact with online services.
“Every friction point we encounter online was designed with a human on the other end,”
Lin said, adding that:
“When the actor is an AI agent, those same mechanisms become blockers.”
Lin argued blockchain infrastructure is better suited to AI commerce because it allows programmable, instant and borderless micropayments without relying on manual human approval at every stage of a transaction.
“For an AI agent making hundreds of micro-payments across different services to complete a single task, the traditional system simply doesn’t work at that speed or scale,”
She said.
The comments come as AI developers increasingly deploy autonomous agents to manage crypto wallets, execute trades and interact directly with onchain applications, raising concerns around security vulnerabilities, legal liability and operational accountability.
Lin said one of the largest unresolved issues involves determining responsibility if an AI agent is hacked or executes an unauthorised transaction, arguing that safeguards such as permissioned access controls, isolated transaction simulations and secure private-key storage must be embedded into infrastructure from the outset.
“The technology to do all of this exists today on crypto rails,”
Lin said, adding:
“The question is whether the people building these tools prioritise it.”
OKX also announced it had open-sourced its AI agent trade kit under an MIT licence while promoting its Agent Payments Protocol as an open standard for blockchain-based AI commerce, amid growing concerns that a small number of major technology companies could eventually dominate AI-controlled payment systems.
