Professional investors cut Bitcoin ETF holdings by 52K BTC
Professional investors sharply reduced their exposure to US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds during the first quarter as Bitcoin's correction deepened and trading-focused institutions unwound positions.
A CoinShares analysis of quarterly 13F filings found that professional investors cut their Bitcoin ETF holdings to 261,000 BTC from 313,000 BTC, representing a decline of approximately 52,000 BTC, or 17%.
The value of those holdings fell 35% to $17.8 billion, while the share of total US Bitcoin ETF assets held by professional managers declined from 24.7% to 20.8%.
“This dataset is consistent with what bitcoin markets have historically looked like in drawdowns,”
Said CoinShares digital asset analyst Matt Kimmell, adding:
“Leveraged and tactical strategies unwind.”
Hedge funds accounted for the largest reduction, selling 31,400 BTC, while brokerages cut exposure by 18,800 BTC, together representing about 96% of the overall decline in professional ownership.
In contrast, investment advisers reduced their holdings by only 5.9%, while banks more than doubled their exposure, adding approximately 7,800 BTC during the quarter despite the market downturn.
The shift occurred as Bitcoin fell 22% during the first quarter and briefly traded below $60,000, though CoinShares noted that regulatory progress, growing institutional acceptance and ongoing debate around the CLARITY Act could support longer-term adoption of digital assets.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $63,304.24.
