India and the United States are continuing active negotiations on a trade deal, according to the new US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor.
Gor said another call to discuss the agreement was scheduled for Tuesday but did not give details on participants.
He said the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains strong despite recent disagreements.
Real friends can disagree but will always resolve their differences at the end.
Sergio Gor said.
His comments followed claims by some US officials that India was responsible for delays in finalising the deal, which Delhi has rejected.
Trade talks have been strained since the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, including measures linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil.
Washington has pushed for greater access to India’s agricultural sector, a demand New Delhi has repeatedly resisted.
Gor described India as having “no partner more essential” than the US and said the relationship could become the most consequential of the century.
India’s foreign ministry said both sides have come close to a deal several times and remain engaged in negotiations.
The talks come as the US has warned of further tariffs if India does not curb oil purchases from Russia.
