Hostplus, one of Australia’s largest pension funds, is considering adding cryptocurrency investment options in response to growing member demand.
The fund said it may offer Bitcoin and other digital assets through its ChoicePlus platform as early as the next financial year, subject to regulatory approval.
“There’s certainly a demand from some of our members who write in and say, ‘Why can’t I have access to cryptocurrency?’”
Said chief investment officer, Sam Sicilia.
The proposal remains in the design phase and would require safeguards around consumer protection before launch.
Hostplus manages more than $96 billion in assets and serves around 2.2 million members, making it a significant player in Australia’s retirement system.
The move follows earlier steps by AMP, which introduced Bitcoin exposure via futures in 2024, and reflects growing institutional interest in crypto.
For now, most Australians access crypto in retirement portfolios through self-managed super funds, which have seen rising adoption due to limited options in traditional funds.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $70,870.67.
