Galaxy wins New York crypto licences

Galaxy Digital secured a BitLicense and Money Transmission License from the New York State Department of Financial Services, expanding the company’s regulated crypto services for institutional investors in New York.

The approvals were granted to GalaxyOne Prime NY, the firm’s subsidiary focused on institutional digital asset trading and financing services, allowing the business to operate in one of the most tightly regulated crypto jurisdictions in the United States.

“New York represents the deepest pool of institutional capital in the country,”

Said Mike Novogratz.

Introduced in 2015, New York’s BitLicense framework is considered one of the strictest crypto regulatory regimes in the US because it requires extensive compliance standards covering anti-money laundering controls, cybersecurity, capital reserves and consumer protection.

The regulatory approvals come as Galaxy Digital reported a net loss of $216 million for the first quarter ended March 31, primarily driven by weaker cryptocurrency prices despite results still outperforming analyst expectations.

Gross revenue declined to $10.2 billion from $12.9 billion a year earlier, though the company said it expects growth to accelerate as revenue from its data centre operations expands.

Galaxy has increasingly diversified beyond crypto trading into AI and high-performance computing infrastructure, with future growth expected to be supported by its Helios Data Center campus in Texas.
