France sets 2027 quantum encryption deadline

  • France will stop certifying security products that lack quantum-resistant encryption from 2027.
  • Officials warned that future quantum computers could potentially decrypt data stolen and stored today.
  • The move adds urgency to efforts by cryptocurrency developers to prepare Bitcoin and blockchain networks for quantum-era security risks.

France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI announced it will stop certifying security products that do not use quantum-resistant encryption from 2027, marking a significant shift in the country's cybersecurity requirements.

The decision affects government agencies and critical infrastructure operators that rely on ANSSI certification and forms part of a broader plan encouraging organisations to adopt quantum-safe products by 2030.

“It's not only a technical issue,” said ANSSI Chief of Staff Samih Souissi.

ANSSI said the policy is intended to address future risks posed by quantum computing, including so-called "harvest now, decrypt later" attacks in which encrypted data is collected today for potential decryption once sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available.

The announcement has implications for the cryptocurrency sector, where developers are evaluating how Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) and other blockchain networks could transition to quantum-resistant cryptography, while no direct market reaction was reported following the policy update.

Recent industry initiatives include the Ethereum Foundation establishing a post-quantum security team, Coinbase creating a quantum advisory council and the Stellar Development Foundation outlining a roadmap to migrate Stellar (CRYPTO:XLM) toward quantum-safe cryptography.

Although estimates for the arrival of cryptographically relevant quantum computers vary, companies including Google and specialised quantum security firms have increasingly urged governments, enterprises and blockchain networks to begin preparing for a post-quantum security environment.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $63,812.32.
