Forgotten Runiverse, a fantasy-themed blockchain MMORPG built on Ethereum scaling network Ronin, has shut down its game servers less than a year after launch, citing financial infeasibility.

The team behind the game, which is part of the Forgotten Runes project, said maintaining a live environment no longer made sense economically despite efforts to overcome operational challenges.

“While our team worked tirelessly and was initially able to overcome many of these obstacles, we’ve reached a point where it no longer makes sense financially to maintain the game in a live environment in its current state,”

The developers said in a post on X.

Forgotten Runiverse launched globally last year as a free-to-play, browser-based game inspired by the Forgotten Runes Wizard’s Cult NFT collection on Ethereum

Although servers are now offline, the team said all player accounts and progress data will be preserved while it evaluates a possible path forward for the project.

“The Runiverse isn’t gone, merely resting,”

The developers said, adding that updates would be shared if circumstances change.

The shutdown adds to a growing list of crypto games that have closed as funding and player adoption have dried up, following similar exits by titles such as Deadrop, Nyan Heroes and Pirate Nation.

Forgotten Runiverse had previously attracted backing from investors including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and was once approved for development on major gaming consoles.

At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $3,002.25.
