Forgotten Runiverse, a fantasy-themed blockchain MMORPG built on Ethereum scaling network Ronin, has shut down its game servers less than a year after launch, citing financial infeasibility.
The team behind the game, which is part of the Forgotten Runes project, said maintaining a live environment no longer made sense economically despite efforts to overcome operational challenges.
“While our team worked tirelessly and was initially able to overcome many of these obstacles, we’ve reached a point where it no longer makes sense financially to maintain the game in a live environment in its current state,”
The developers said in a post on X.
Forgotten Runiverse launched globally last year as a free-to-play, browser-based game inspired by the Forgotten Runes Wizard’s Cult NFT collection on Ethereum
Although servers are now offline, the team said all player accounts and progress data will be preserved while it evaluates a possible path forward for the project.
“The Runiverse isn’t gone, merely resting,”
The developers said, adding that updates would be shared if circumstances change.
