The FBI has warned of a scam involving a fake Tron-based token designed to trick users into revealing sensitive information and risking wallet compromise.
The alert, issued by the FBI’s New York field office on March 19, highlighted impersonation tactics using urgent messages claiming users must complete identity verification to avoid asset restrictions.
“FBI New York encourages users of the Tron blockchain network to exercise caution if they encounter a token purported to be from the FBI,”
The agency said.
The fraudulent token directs users to a fake website prompting AML verification, despite the FBI confirming it does not issue tokens or request identity checks through blockchain channels.
Authorities urged users not to interact with any related links or provide personal data, warning that such schemes are designed to extract wallet details and enable theft.
The warning comes as crypto-related fraud losses have surged to an estimated $17 billion across 2025 and 2026, driven by scams including impersonation, crypto ATM fraud and AI-assisted attacks.
Officials advised affected users to report incidents through the FBI’s IC3 platform, as authorities continue to track evolving threats across DeFi and blockchain ecosystems.
At the time of reporting, Tron price was $0.3102.
