Farage faces pressure over Russian hack claim

Nigel Farage is under increasing pressure to provide evidence for claims that Russian-linked hackers were responsible for exposing details of a £5 million gift he received from crypto investor Christopher Harborne.

Reform UK said analysis by “counter-espionage experts” suggested Farage’s phone, email and bank accounts had been compromised by hostile actors “almost certainly linked to Moscow” using spear-phishing tactics before media reports revealed details of the undeclared payment.

Farage described the alleged activity as “deeply concerning” and said:

“It highlighted the threat they pose to British security” in comments to the Mail on Sunday.

The controversy follows mounting scrutiny over the £5 million transfer from Harborne, which Farage reportedly did not publicly declare despite parliamentary transparency requirements covering gifts and donations above specific thresholds.

Political opponents from both Labour and the Conservatives have called on Farage to hand any evidence linked to the alleged hack to British security services, while reports said the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre was not aware of any formal complaint connected to the matter.

A spokesperson for The Guardian rejected the hacking allegations and described them as an attempt to divert attention from questions surrounding Farage’s financial disclosures and the origins of the funds.

The payment was reportedly made before Farage announced his return to frontline politics during the 2024 UK general election campaign and came through a company linked to Harborne, one of Britain’s wealthiest crypto investors and a major donor to right-wing political causes.

The case has also renewed scrutiny over potential Russian-linked business connections tied to some of Harborne’s wealth, while parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg has opened an investigation into whether disclosure rules were breached.
