Farage faces probe over crypto-linked donor payment

Nigel Farage is reportedly facing a parliamentary standards inquiry over whether he failed to declare a £5 million ($6.7 million) gift received from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before entering the UK Parliament in 2024.

According to reports from the BBC, the UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner opened an investigation into whether Farage breached House of Commons disclosure rules by not registering the payment after becoming a member of parliament.

Farage said he was under “no obligation” to declare the donation because the gift was received before he entered Parliament, although critics and political opponents argued the payment should still have been disclosed.

The UK Conservative Party reportedly referred the matter both to the parliamentary watchdog and the Electoral Commission, which is considering whether to open a separate investigation into the donation.

The inquiry adds to increasing scrutiny surrounding cryptocurrency-linked political funding and Farage’s ties to crypto-related businesses and investors.

Last month, the UK Liberal Democrats called on the Financial Conduct Authority to investigate whether Farage breached financial promotion rules through his involvement with crypto firm Stack BTC, in which he previously disclosed a financial stake.

The controversy comes as UK lawmakers debate whether to restrict or temporarily ban cryptocurrency donations to political parties amid concerns over transparency, foreign influence and national security risks tied to digital asset funding.
