  • The European Central Bank launched preparatory operations to invest its proprietary capital directly into tokenised euro-denominated securities.
  • Settlement for these digital asset transactions will execute natively using Pontes to ensure central bank money integration.
  • The strategic capital deployment aims to scale distributed ledger technology adoption across broader European digital asset ecosystems.

The European Central Bank launched preparatory operations to invest proprietary capital into tokenised euro-denominated debt instruments.

The central monetary authority will execute these digital asset investments utilising distributed ledger technology market rails.

“The Eurosystem is working to enable a more integrated, innovative and resilient European financial market in the digital age,” said European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde.

Tokenised bond purchases will settle natively through the newly launched Pontes blockchain platform.

“Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenised finance ecosystem,” said European Central Bank Executive Board Member Piero Cipollone.

Initial blockchain investments prioritise tokenised euro debt issued by regional governments and supranational public institutions.

Direct market participation allows the institution to build practical portfolio management expertise navigating tokenised lifecycles.

The initiative anchors institutional digital asset ecosystems directly with sovereign central bank liquidity.
