Ethereum whale buys $111M after year-long exit

A whale investor has purchased 50,706 Ethereum worth $111.62 million using USDT, marking a major re-entry into the market after selling holdings a year earlier.

Onchain data from Lookonchain shows the trader acquired ETH at an average price of $2,201 through two wallets, ending a seven-month period of inactivity.

The purchases were funded by proceeds from a prior sale of 28,683 ETH at an average price of $3,892, indicating a strategy to re-enter at significantly lower levels in anticipation of a potential rebound.

Ethereum is currently trading around $2,198, down more than 55% from its all-time high of $4,946 recorded in August 2025, despite a recent 5.45% daily decline.

Other large wallets have shown similar behaviour, including a separate $49 million ETH purchase following earlier sales, though links to ShapeShift founder Erik Voorhees have been publicly denied.

Recent weeks have also seen a return of institutional inflows into Ethereum and Bitcoin via US spot exchange-traded funds, signalling improving investor sentiment.

Additional support has come from new guidance by the US Securities and Exchange Commission stating that most cryptocurrencies are not securities, providing greater regulatory clarity for the market.

At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $2,203.59.
