Hsiao-Wei Wang, co-director of the Ethereum Foundation, has stepped down with immediate effect, extending a period of leadership turnover as the organisation restructures its operations.
Wang’s departure follows her sabbatical and comes after fellow co-director Tomasz Stańczak left in February, with Bastian Aue subsequently appointed interim co-director alongside Wang.
“During my break, Bastian guided the transition with care and thoughtfulness, and I appreciate the work he and many others have put into that process,” said Ethereum Foundation co-director Hsiao-Wei Wang.
The exit follows comments from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in May that the Foundation would become a smaller and more focused organisation, while recent departures have also included researcher Dankrad Feist and other long-serving team members.
The Foundation has also introduced a more transparent treasury policy and began staking treasury assets earlier this year, with a stated goal of staking about 70,000 ETH valued at roughly US$119 million at current prices, and following the announcement the Ethereum share price was down 1.4% at US$1,708.
Leadership changes have coincided with debate within the Ethereum community about the Foundation’s role in supporting ecosystem growth, with some contributors calling for alternative organisations to help advance development priorities.
Ethereum Foundation leaders have been pursuing organisational changes since early 2025, including efforts to strengthen ties with ecosystem participants and refine the network’s relationship with layer-2 scaling platforms, while ETH remains about 66% below its August 2025 record high of US$4,946.
At the time of reporting, Ethereum price was $1,705.16.
