Block co-founder Jack Dorsey has outlined a vision for AI-led workplaces where artificial intelligence replaces traditional middle management roles, weeks after the company cut around 4,000 employees.

Dorsey said AI could manage workflows, assign tasks and track performance more efficiently than human managers, as Block begins transitioning toward this model.

“We're questioning the underlying assumption: that organisations have to be hierarchically organised with humans as the coordination mechanism,”

Said Jack Dorsey.

The company is exploring a structure where AI handles coordination while employees take on roles such as individual contributors, directly responsible individuals and “player-coaches.”

Dorsey argued that traditional hierarchies slow down information flow, while AI can provide real-time insights into operations and improve decision-making speed.

Despite the shift, Block said humans will remain central to key business and ethical decisions, even as AI takes on more operational responsibilities.

The move reflects a broader trend across the tech sector, where companies are restructuring around AI to improve efficiency and remain competitive.
