DOJ's $15B Bitcoin seizure targets scam networks

The US Department of Justice's record bitcoin forfeiture case has returned to the spotlight as authorities intensify efforts against international scam compounds tied to cryptocurrency fraud and organised crime.

The case centres on Cambodian businessman Chen Zhi, also known as Vincent, whom prosecutors accused of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy while seeking forfeiture of approximately 127,271 BTC worth about $15 billion.

“The complaint is the largest forfeiture action in the history of the Department of Justice,”

The DOJ said.

Federal investigators alleged that networks connected to scam compounds across Southeast Asia were involved in cryptocurrency fraud, money laundering, human trafficking and other forms of transnational criminal activity targeting victims worldwide.

The FBI's broader Operation Blackout campaign has targeted scam centres operating across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, combining investigations into crypto fraud with efforts to combat trafficking and organised crime.

“We helped free nearly 2,000 trafficked workers, shut down more than $8 billion in scam center fraud, and arrested nearly 300 people,”

Said FBI Director Kash Patel.

Authorities said cooperation with private-sector partners played a role in the crackdown, including efforts that led to the suspension of more than 7,000 communications terminals allegedly linked to scam operations in Myanmar.

The forfeiture action forms part of a broader DOJ strategy targeting scam-compound networks, with recent enforcement efforts resulting in criminal charges, the seizure of hundreds of fraudulent investment websites and the restraint of more than $700 million in cryptocurrency allegedly connected to money-laundering activities.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $72,627.32.
