Protect Progress, an affiliate of crypto-focused super PAC Fairshake, plans to spend $1.5 million to oppose Texas Representative Al Green in the upcoming Democratic primary.

The group criticised Green for opposing crypto-related legislation, including the GENIUS Act and the CLARITY Act, which sought to regulate stablecoins and clarify digital asset oversight.

“As a member of the Financial Services Committee, Representative Al Green has decided to try and stop American innovation in its tracks,”

Protect Progress said.

Green, who has represented Texas’s 9th congressional district since 2005, faces Christian Menefee in the March Democratic primary, with Texas among the first states to hold primary votes ahead of the November midterms.

Crypto advocacy group Stand With Crypto rates Green as strongly against crypto, while Menefee is described as strongly supportive based on his public statements and policy positions.

Menefee has expressed support for blockchain applications in public services, including using distributed ledger technology to combat deed fraud and modernise government record-keeping.

The spending effort highlights the crypto industry’s expanding political footprint, following Fairshake’s reported $130 million outlay in the 2024 elections and its disclosure of $193 million raised ahead of the next midterm cycle.
