The cryptocurrency industry has expressed widespread regret after US Senator Cynthia Lummis announced she will not seek reelection in 2026.
Lummis has been a prominent advocate for digital assets and played a central role in shaping US crypto policy debates in recent years.
Her decision prompted an outpouring of tributes from investors, executives and policymakers across the crypto sector.
Venture capital firm a16z head of government affairs Collin McCune said her influence on the industry was decisive.
Crypto would not be where it is today without her fight in the Congress.
Collin McCune said.
Crypto investment firm Multicoin also praised Lummis for advancing policy priorities that had previously struggled to gain traction.
Multicoin general partner Greg Xethalis said her background helped push reform through resistant political environments.
Her priorities have advanced so far because sometimes it takes a cattle rancher like Sen Lummis to drive good policy.
Greg Xethalis said.
In her public statement, Lummis said she lacked the energy required to commit to another six-year term.
I am a devout legislator, but I feel like a sprinter in a marathon. The energy required doesn’t match up.
Lummis said.
Support also came from senior officials within the White House following her announcement.
White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks described Lummis as a key supporter of digital assets.
A great ally on crypto.
David Sacks said, adding that he was “very sorry to see her go.”
Bitcoin advocate and Coin Stories host Natalie Brunell also thanked Lummis for her contribution to the sector.
Thank you for your service and for helping move the Bitcoin cause forward. Wishing you a wonderful next chapter.
Natalie Brunell said.
Despite disappointment over her departure, industry leaders stressed that legislative efforts remain ongoing.
Multicoin managing partner Kyle Samani said the policy agenda remains unfinished.
Jobs not done. We have legislation to pass in 2026.
Kyle Samani said.
Lummis’ announcement followed renewed optimism around crypto legislation in Congress.
David Sacks recently said lawmakers could advance the US Clarity Act as early as January.
We are closer than ever to passing the landmark crypto market structure legislation that President Trump has called for.
David Sacks said.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $88,960.75.
