Coinbase investigates false World Cup AI alert
- Coinbase is investigating an AI-generated alert that incorrectly reported a FIFA World Cup result before the match was played.
- Chief executive Brian Armstrong acknowledged the issue after users criticised the false notification on social media.
- The incident has renewed scrutiny of AI safeguards as Coinbase expands its prediction markets and AI-powered products.
Coinbase is investigating an AI-generated notification that incorrectly reported Norway had defeated Brazil 3-2 in a FIFA World Cup match before the game had begun, prompting criticism from users over the reliability of its prediction market alerts.
The alert was reportedly sent while the match was listed as delayed on Coinbase's own prediction market page, contradicting the platform's live event status and triggering complaints that the notification contained fabricated information.
"Taking a look with the team – thx for reporting it," said Coinbase Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong in response to users who flagged the issue on social media.
The incident comes after Armstrong previously described prediction markets as a tool for discovering reliable information, while Coinbase has expanded AI usage across its business, including software development and the rollout of prediction markets in the United States through its partnership with Kalshi.
Coinbase has not announced the cause of the erroneous notification or whether automated sports alerts will be suspended, and the company's shares were not materially affected immediately following the reports.
Armstrong has previously addressed issues involving push notifications, including a targeting bug in March, while stating the company prefers to avoid restricting customer access to markets unless necessary.
The latest incident highlights growing attention on the accuracy of AI-generated content in financial products as Coinbase continues pursuing its strategy of integrating artificial intelligence into customer-facing services and trading tools.
